Spies Like Us

It was one of those days that never seem to end
I needed down-time, have a drink with a friend
But, stuck in a strange town with noone around
I was left to my ... preferred vices

We met in the spring of ‘o’ one five (‘15)
She was dressed to kill, could have me dead or alive
Had I known this Mata Hari might blow my cover
I would have reconsidered ... to have her as a lover

For spies like us, any time is right
Sam Spade, he’s my archetype
My Danger Man, my double ought seven
Doin’ my best ... to stay outta heaven

In a couple drinks or maybe more
It dawned on me who she worked for
I never expected she’d share my profession
I’d better find a priest ... give my confession

A respite from all them prying eyes
A brief interlude to revitalize
We gave new meaning to undercover
... In the end ... she was a sensitive lover

I got a call from Belarus
They didn’t need to tell me the news
She was already gone, in this tricky business
There’s no such thing ... as coincidences

I packed my bag, an Uber at the door
To my surprise, I lived to spy some more
Back to cloaks and daggers and shadowy spooks
In the art of lying ... there ain’t no truth

For spies like us, any time is right
Sam Spade, he’s my archetype
My Danger Man, my double ought seven
Doin’ my best ... to stay outta heaven
